Receiving the gold award for ‘Best Use Of A Blog’ in our Best Blog Awards 2012, HerUni.com stood out amongst its competitors for a variety of reasons. From its insightful content through to its attractive design, HerUni.com delivers on every single level and is a well-deserved winner of its gold placing.
But what makes HerUni.com such a fantastic blog in our judges’ eyes is not the actual content or images you read or view, but it’s how the content is delivered. This is really what makes it unique, as it does so in such a way that as a reader, you can really form a connection. A relationship.
Speak to anyone who has been to university and who stayed away from home. From the moment they decided to live away to the day they actually moved, they were planning and preparing. Looking at what they needed to take with them. Finding out what the essentials were and buying (or borrowing) them to ensure their life at university was as enjoyable as it could be.
But the one thing those moving away to university often don’t have that their friends who stayed at home to go to university do is a friend. Someone to share their worries and questions with. Someone they can have a chat with to find out everything from what they should actually do when at university through to how they can look stylish and fashionable without breaking the bank.
And that’s where HerUni.com steps in.
Essentially acting as your one-stop social university resource (the blog’s tagline is actually ‘The Female University Student’s Guide To News, Deals & Fashion’), HerUni.com brings together everything you could want as a female university student and delivers it in such a way that not only have you always got something to read and keep you company (and entertained!), but you’ve got instant access to everything from clothing through to eating.
Packed full of information and updated regularly, HerUni.com really is the perfect one-stop shop for all of your social needs as a female university student.
However, what was seen as a particularly positive point about HerUni.com is that although its target audience is female university students, it’s in fact of interest to a huge market – more the late-teens to early-twenties females in general, rather than simply those at university. Especially when it comes to fashion, you can easily find a plentiful amount of information on affordable styles, celebrity trends and general fashion reviews and news on the blog.
Having over 400 student contributors and in excess of 30 editors nationwide, one of our favourite parts of HerUni.com is its 20 MyUni pages. Each tailored to a different university around the country, the MyUni pages are a part of the blog that offer an exclusive space for students to provide updates on their everyday university life – a real insight into just what goes on in students’ lives right around the country.
Geraldine Haneine, Editor-in-Chief at HerUni.com, explained why she believed HerUni.com has been so successful to date, saying “HerUni.com is a multi-faceted website for female university students in the UK. Not only is it an online magazine that covers a broad range of topics specifically tailored for our demographic, but it also serves as a publishing platform for aspiring journalists and creatives. Given that in university sometimes a community is hard to find, HerUni is also planned to provide an online space where students can bond and have a dialogue about their interests, passions and concerns.”
“HerUni was created whilst I was completing my Masters degree in Journalism, during which I noticed that there was also a lack of online space to showcase student work. As a student journalist and creative, it is key to get your name out there and establish an online presence for future employers to see.”
“When HerUni was created, there was nothing in the publishing market, print or online, that catered to the university girl in terms of fashion, style, beauty, wellbeing, love and suited their budget at the same time. There is a vast range of publications out there that talk about what a uni girl loves, but not specifically what she can afford. HerUni does both. A first of its kind in the UK and Europe.”
Without doubt worthy of its gold award, HerUni.com has shown just what can be achieved with a blog. Not simply using copy or the occasional image in a traditional blogging format, HerUni.com utilises the blogging platform in such a way that it is attractive, informative and much loved by each and every one of its readers and contributors.
